Ban Fracking in Rochester

Evidence increasingly shows that hydraulic fracturing devastates the natural ecosystems and human communities where this practice for natural gas extraction is used. Fracking poisons our water and our air, increases earthquake activity, sickens our families, and stresses local infrastructure. Yet despite this and the continued resistance by the people, our state elected officials have taken no action to permanently halt such catastrophic activities by the gas industry within New York State.

The City of Rochester, recognizing the threat of fracking, has previously established a moratorium on such activities in June 2012 and June 2013. However, this is set to expire in the coming months leaving our community vulnerable.

Therefore, we, the People of the City of Rochester, call on Mayor Lovely Warren and the Rochester City Council to enact legislation banning hydraulic fracturing, the transport of its byproducts, and all other related activities, within the City of Rochester.

This technique should never have been allowed to even start. Now it MUST be banned, because it never can be done environmentally safely. Greed must not be allowed to over power good sense.

Fracking is a dead end in the sustainable energy communiy; solar, wind, thermal heating and cooling.

Rochester’s water supply will be endangered – whether through depletion or pollution – even if nothing goes “wrong.” Fracking uses, then permanently pollutes billions of gallons of fresh water, our most precious resource. Drilling requires noisy, polluting diesel generators running 24/7, and many large trucks to carry waste water away – to who knows where. Out of state workers put pressure on housing stock, driving prices beyond what local folks can afford. This has all been the experience of people just south of us in PA. Don’t let it happen here!

WHERE has hydrofracking been done that has NOT hurt the environment? Let’s not boast about JOBS…while destroying water and environment…the price is too high just for a temporary paycheck.

We are not residents of the city, but of the Community of Rochester, so whatever city government does will affect us.

We’ve Banned Fracking in both the city and town of Canandaigua. Rochester must do this! We are already too polluted in this precious area of the state. Our country is going to hell, and taking the planet with it (in terms of climate change)
